Ep. 32 – Shame, Guilt, & Conviction – Which One Drives You?

January 12, 2023

Shame is a powerful motivator…to hide what you are doing. There are 3 concepts that have to due with altering behaviors. One is shame, which is social pressure that causes you to feel bad about your behavior. Shame is the least effective way to change behaviors because the person does not believe what they did was wrong but feel embarrassed about how society views them. Guilt is a better motivator for change than shame because guilt means you know you did wrong and have a negative emotional response to your own behavior. Guilt is better than shame because it is an internal belief. But what happens when the feelings ware off? People are likely to go back to the bad behaviors. Conviction is the understanding that a behavior is bad and you avoid doing it not because of emotions but because you just believe that behavior is wrong. Conviction is the best response to changing behaviors because it was not motivated by emotions and is therefore more likely to be a long lasting change because emotions often wear off, but the belief and choice through conviction does not.
